Milk Production

The mission for progressive dairy farmers is to profitably produce high quality milk on a consistent basis with quality integrity. The goal is simple, but achieving it requires the cows and the people that are capable of contributing to your goal. The Milk production industry is rapidly becoming a global industry with a competitive spirit driven by low cost and high production per cow per day.

DairyXL is a specialist in maximizing milk production per pound/kilo of dry matter intake. Milk to dry matter intake ratios are the key elements in the financial success in any dairy operational globally. DairyXL maximizes that efficiency.

DairyXL will have a long term focus on the end users profitability and the development of your sustainable business, dedicated to creating a food supply with integrity. Peak milk production can only be achieved by a fresh cow. Freshen rates must be improved to increase average milk production per cow per day on any of today’s most progressive dairies.

Cow grouping and segregation

Milking cows should be grouped by age and stage of pregnancy, not days in Milk. All first lactation cows should be grouped together for their entire lactation. Second lactation and older cows can be mixed together. All open cows and animals being heat detected and inseminated should be penned together in the pens with the headlocks, while once checked pregnant they can then be housed together accordingly in the open railed pens without the headlocks. DairyXL is expert at maximize performance from cow grouping and segregation procedures.

Feed, Feeding and Nutrition

Even before ethanol production, corn was the king of dairy feeds, especially as the forage of corn silage. Advances in corn hybrid genetics have presented many improvements in the production of food and fiber for our world. The role of corn silage never has been as prevalent as it is today in the diets of lactating dairy cattle for the production of one of nature’s most perfect foods, milk.

Unfortunately, the costs to provide the feed to dairy cows in return for this precious food have become astronomical. Feed represents the most costly cash outflow for dairy cattle producers, and the cost to raise or buy that input has reached record levels. Worse yet, this has happened at a time when the cash inflow from selling milk is at a record low price and comparable to the price received 30 years ago.

So while dairy farmers start out each day just trying to keep their business afloat, astute managers are fine-tuning every aspect of their operation to that end. One obvious area is feed management. DairyXL will maximize your production output from the highest single line item in dairy production: Feed Costs.

Milkworks

Another typical area affecting lost milk harvest is the milking parlors, systems, and settings. DairyXL will utilized its exclusively designed parlor management program: Milkworks.

There are several ways that a dairy would benefit from the Milkworks program. This program fills a need for parlor performance evaluation and can help the dairyman to achieve his best potential in milk ability, thus increasing his profitability. There are many opportunities to improve performance, prevent low quality milk production, assist with management of individual personnel and improve cow health. The reality exists that many large progressive dairies lack focus on their parlor efficiencies. Lack of resources, including time and personnel, from milking equipment companies, has led to a need for Milkworks Representatives providing specialized assessment of milking procedures, optimal equipment performance and milk quality report evaluations; therefore, leading to improved milk quality and dairy efficiencies. Consistent monitoring provides an opportunity for improvement and resolution of problems.  Specialized functional care for dairies.

The incorporation of Milkworks provides a full evaluation of parlor performance issues that may be affecting milk quality, milking efficiency and cow health. Diagnostics of pulsation rate and ratio, along with vacuum stability, will be included in reports to the dairy (example noted) with recommendations. Particular attention is paid to milking performance, milking procedures, proper milk path and overall teat health. Comprehensive walk thru of the dairies will provide information on cow comfort and health, freestall function, heat abatement, proper water supplies and overall cleanliness of the dairy. Events that will be monitored remotely via herd software management, for dairies without meters, will be somatic cell counts, milk production, and bacteria counts. Remote monitoring for dairies with meters will include the above, plus unit on time, milk/cow/milking, flow rates in the first two minutes and manual versus automatic detaches.

The expected value for the dairy would see significant decreases in somatic cell and bacteria counts, optimal parlor performance with more cows through the parlor and total optimization for parlor efficiency. In general, lower somatic cell counts are produced by healthier cows. All of these factors will increase profitability for the Dairy.

In short:

  • Milkworks is a program that is designed to be either a standalone or a support program.
  • Milkworks Representatives provide specialized assessment of:
    • milking procedures,
    • optimal equipment performance
    • Milk quality report evaluations leading to improved milk quality and dairy efficiencies.
    • Improved cow health
    • Lower SCC scores
    • Therefore improved reproduction.
  • The offering of Milkworks provides a full evaluation of parlor performance issues that may be affecting milk quality, milking efficiency and cow health and reproduction.
  • The expected value for the dairy would see significant decreases in somatic cell and bacteria counts, optimal parlor performance with more cows through the parlor and total optimization for parlor efficiency.
